Description of Work:
Independent judgment an initiative are required in determining appropriate actions for injured and vicious animals.
Position responsible to provide day-to-day care for the physical and medical needs of the animals, assists with maintaining facilities, prepares and maintains files and records.
Keeps accurate tracking of narcotics and other controlled substances, including ordering needed drugs.
Tact, courtesy and firmness are necessary in dealing with the public.
Participates in the work of staff engaged in animal care including issues regarding strays, rabid, and other animal problems, care, housing, feeding, medical attention, adoption and euthanasia of animals.
Tests animals for heart worms, performs parasite screening, check heart and lungs, monitor animal behavior and help identify strategies to market animals for adoption.
Conducts daily walk through to check on each animal’s welfare.
Knowledge of thorough departmental policies that reflect community values, laws, regulations, and professional principles of animal engagement.
Establishes effective relationships with animal control officers, animal advocacy groups, and other related agencies.
Helps to develop and implement various public educations programs regarding animal care and county ordinances.
Coordinates with veterinarian services for visits and/or treatment of injured animals.
Stays within approved budget in the treatment of animals.
Coordinates with rescue groups to help pay for treatment of animals if necessary.
Answers the telephone and takes messages about stray animals, provides information about animals at the shelter, and adoption procedures to visitors.
Assists in posting animals for adoption to Social Media sites and assists in the adoption of animals at the Facility.
Completes forms, accepts payments, maintains completed records on activities, keeps daily logs of activities and calls.
Administers rabies vaccinations and euthanizes animals at the facility.
Tranquilizes animals when needed.
Assists in destroying diseased vicious, and unclaimed animals in the prescribed manner.
Assists with spay and neuter clinics, adoption events and other functions hosted by the Animal Service Facility.
Works with the Health Department on rabies cases, bite cases, and dangerous dog cases.
Participates in keeping records and preparing reports of work activities, insures accurate tracking of narcotics and other controlled substances, insures accurate tracking of any cash and other financial collections.
Must understand and be able to use Chameleon Software system.
Minimum Education And Experience:
Graduation from Community College with a degree in veterinary technology or related field and experience in animal welfare.
Prefer Veterinary Technician Degree or certification with current State Euthanasia and Vaccination Certifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Possession of Veterinary Technician certification or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of or ability to obtain certification in animal euthanasia within 6 months of hire.
Possession of or ability to obtain rabies vaccination certification within 6 months of hire.
Possession of or ability to obtain certifications from DOC to work with inmates.
Possession of valid NC Driver’s license.
Candidate must have a working knowledge of County geography.
